14 de April de 2021

LOSADA GODELLO 2020

THE MUST-HAVE OF THE SEASON TO ENJOY OUTDOORS

Urban terrace, attic, porch, balcony or garden, chill out or design. Whatever your style is, it will be your perfect companion.

With the arrival of good weather we relate relaxation with an outdoor lifestyle. We share an aperitif, we banish the clock, we relax looking at the sea or reading a book. All are great pleasures of the coming season. Shall we complete it with one more to share?

Godello Finca Losada 2020, is a fresh wine, ideal for these days of pleasant temperatures, purely gastronomic and ready to enjoy. Fresh and elegant, round and delicate in the mouth, with a citric acidity that brings freshness and invites to drink.

Notes of white fruit previously appreciated on the nose and a sweet finish with mineral touches characteristic of the plot where it was born, slate soils in San Lorenzo and San Esteban de Valdueza, at an altitude of over 600 meters.
It is an unpressed wine aged for 6 months on fine lees 75% in stainless steel and 25% in used 500-liter French oak barrels.

It fits perfectly with fresh dishes such as: avocado Salmorejo, apple Gazpacho, rice salad or spicy tofu scrambled tacos. In general, baked or grilled fish and white meats.

Enjoy the villas and landscapes of El Bierzo in autumn!

25 de September de 2020

It is now when a visit to the region of El Bierzo becomes essential to enjoy the landscape, with its yellow, brown and orange colours and new experiences.

Its seasonal products such as chestnuts and apples Reineta and its traditional dishes such as Botillo, the true star of this region's gastronomy, together with a cuisine with more avant-garde trends, you will want to accompany them for the first time with Paraje (lieu-dit) wines and wines from Villa of  Losada winery, one of the first wineries to launch wines for this new label, which represent a new era.

The new classifications of vineyards are subject to greater demands on production and greater control, and the vineyards of the new municipalities are put to good use.

Mencia and Godello are the two native varieties of the region that make their wines unique and different from the rest, but others such as Garnacha Tintorera, Estaladiña or Merenzao are also involved in these wines with the new labelling in geographical units.

Altos de Losada. Villa de San Lorenzo wine 2019, is a limited edition, as the area has all the characteristics to produce a great godello: altitude, fresh area that allows slow ripening, and slate soil. It is aged for eight months on lees 80% in used French oak casks of 2,000 litres.
It shows aromas of citrus and white flowers, stone fruit and pear, minerality and a certain saltiness. Generous and mature, with great freshness and vitality.
Production: less than 1,000 bottles

Altos de Losada. Wine from Villa de Valtuille de Arriba 2018, a red that has its origin in 17 small pieces of old Mencia vineyard. Recovered by Losada Vinos de Finca, they have been grown and produced separately. The encounter between the clays of its origin and its 15 months of aging in French oak barrels, form an earthy, lively, carnal, and deeply captivating wine. Elegant, fragrant and complex nose. The first wine to be made in Losada and which sums up the philosophy of its land project.
Production: 20.000 bottles
More info

Altos de Losada "La Bienquerida" came from "las Chas"2018. (lieu-dit)  La Bienquerida is a small vineyard with slate soils, mencía and other little known varieties (estaladiña and merenzao among others). Almost on the verge of disappearing, it has been recovered by Losada Vinos de Finca. It shows the combination between a singular vineyard, the variety and man.
It remains for 15 months in French oak barrels of different sizes. Fresh violet, mischievous minerality, a layer of chocolate over the ripe fruit, and melted tannins that captivate with their delicacy.
Production: 3.000 bottles
More info

The foundation of Losada Vinos de Finca is the viticulture and interpretation of the terroir of El Bierzo. Located on the Losada estate, halfway between Cacabelos and Villafranca, the challenge is to choose plots where each variety is best expressed, following a traditional production process and a subtle use of the barrel, which gives prominence to the terroir.

$15 WINES THAT TASTE LIKE $50: 2018 GODELLO

10 de June de 2020

Wednesday, June 10, 2020
We are proud, grateful and happy with the mentions by the American critic James Suckling, first Losada 2016 and now our Losada Godello 2018.

$15 WINES THAT TASTE LIKE $50: 2018 GODELLO

LOSADA VINOS DE FINCA GODELLO BIERZO 2018
Country Spain
Region Castilla y León
Vintage 2018
Score
93 Attractive dried herbs and a fresh, minerally edge and plenty of lemon, too. The palate has a supple and elegant feel with a juicy, elegant and very pristine, linear style. Drink now.

The wine world is full of comparisons to get consumers to try something new. “If you like A, try B” is the standard invitation. So, for this report we are borrowing that template to say: “if you like Chablis, try godello.”
Godello is an unsung grape that is just starting to receive more exposure. It is understandable if you don’t drink a lot of it, if any at all. The 1970s and 1980s saw a resurgence of the variety among discerning producers, which saved it from the brink of extinction. And now, plantations have returned in the cooler areas of Spain, concentrated in the vineyards of Valdeorras, as well as in Bierzo, Ribeira Sacra and Monterrei. Unlike mencia, the old vines of godello are much rarer, even though the quality is already reassuring.
Godello is a versatile variety that is often shaped by both terroir and vintage and leaves the winemaker’s thumbprint on the wine. I find the variety is rich in flavors from lemon zest, green apples, quince, to a floral perfume and even reaches tropical notes in a warmer vintage. But good renditions manage to disguise this richness with a mineral sensibility, recalling a sense of the slate soils in Valdeorras. In a way, this subtlety resembles Muscadet and its “crystalline flavors,” which is why I think the comparison to Chablis is apt — a “sharpened” chardonnay with texture and roundness, especially when coming from a cooler vintage.
Godello also rewards winemaking effort. Like chardonnay, and to some extent albarino too, it is a malleable blank canvas onto which winemakers can splash their creativity. When this includes the length of lees contact and the frequency of batonnage (lee-stirring), which can enrich the mouthfeel and render more mid-palate creaminess and perhaps a hint of reductive character, the Spanish word “sobre lias” (on lees) may appear on the label as sign of quality.
As mencia epitomizes Spain’s freshness in red, godello expresses the same drinkable philosophy as a summer white through its zesty fruit and racy acidity. It’s a white I’d crave on a hot summer afternoon. While being highly drinkable and appetizing, godello also ages nicely and often outlives many white wines. You can expect at least five to eight years of life expectancy, and at a modest price.
See below our pick of eight bottles from the 2018 vintage that retail around $15. These provide an alternative to Chablis for your seafood.

GREAT VALUE WINES: 8 TOP MENCIA WINES UNDER $30 by James Suckling

05 de June de 2020

Mencia is the epitome of Spanish freshness. Genetically identical to Portugal’s jaen grape, mencia has had huge success in Spain thanks to acute winemaking know-how, conjuring freshness, authenticity and drinkability in red wines from Galicia. Bierzo, Ribeira Sacra and Valdeorras are prominent DO appellations to be sought out.

Like many neglected grapes, mencia was once considered a little simple and rustic. Young vines planted on plain, fertile land often translate into wines of significant volume, even though mencia is not known for its yields.

But this promising variety has undergone a revival since the discovery of some old vines rooted in the poor but slate-rich soils on steep hillsides, a terroir that conjures up the landscape of Priorat, and this has had a big impact on mencia’s quality. These old vines produce grapes concentrated in tangy flavors but rarely get too jammy or candied fruit-like, producing wines with focused, fresh fruit often featuring strawberries, dark cherries and plums, along with fine herbs and floral perfume. The bright, lively acidity of mencia can rinse the palate, making it extremely food-friendly, and the dense flavors are framed in a taut, grippy medium body, sometimes lightly peppery with a sense of minerality in the finish.

The styles of mencia also reflect well of the land and the vintage. Depending on where it is grown, it drifts from a fruity and lightly rustic gamay to a cool, spicy syrah, or from an ethereal, elegant pinot noir to a fresh, concentrated Loire cabernet franc, sometimes with a rich and spicy edge of grenache in a warmer year. The vibrant mencia makes wines that deserve to be appreciated in their own right.

That said, winemaking also gives mencia versatility, and what I find it tantalizing about this grape is that more thoughtful, avant-garde winemakers like Raul Perez and the Palacios have successfully conjured “naturalness” without deliberately making “natural wine”.

With minimal intervention to bring transparency and the uniqueness of the terroir into the glass, I sense that for mencia, “naturalness” is not a creed, but more like a concept. It sets no boundaries and does not bind the hands of winemakers, but creates honest and heartfelt wines that are closer to the vineyards than to the winery, more agricultural than they are industrial.

Today, mencia wines make up many of the hidden gems waiting to be discovered, especially by wine lovers who look for natural purity of fruit and drinkability. But don’t expect to be guided by labels and categories. “Naturalness” and “authenticity” come hand in hand with mencia wines, a byproduct perhaps of the free spirit of the people who make them.

Check out the following eight bottles we selected under $30 for mencia. These wines are a starting point for the exceptional values of mencia. With their fresh fruit and vibrant acidity, they go great with tacos or enchiladas!
